I met this Mi’kmaq beauty at my first Pow Wow a little over a year ago, and we connected deeply on many levels. It was like I was meant to attend the Pow Wow, if only to meet her. Her name is Savvy Simon, she is of the Mi’kmaq Nation just like me, and she has become a spiritual sister to me, teaching me the ways of the culture. She is a one-of-a-kind human being, with so much love and positivity for everyone that she meets; you cannot help but fall in love with her kind heart.
Savvy is the creator of the #speakmikmaq movement, which has been encouraging the learning, sharing and speaking of the native Mi’kmaq language, and it has gone viral on social media. You can follow along with her on YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Vine & Instagram. This past November, Savvy was one of the amazing motivational speakers at We Day – Atlantic, representing indigenous people and promoting Red Road Tribe; a movement that her and her fiancé Alex created together, where their mission is “encouraging & connecting people to rise above on the Red Road, in sobriety, self-respect & harmony with Creator & culture”.
These two lovebirds are expecting their first baby next month, and I wanted to document their beautiful pregnancy milestone, because they mean so much to me. It was important that I incorporate some Mi’kmaq traditions into the collection, so I thought it only fitting to truck out to the snowy woods on our property, with furs and deer hides in tow, and build a fire. It was a very cold day, -25 with the windchill. As cold as we were though, Alex kept us warm with his drum and songs, and I was able to document their smudging and prayer for their soon to be gwis (son in Mi’kmaq). This was a very amazing experience for me, and I wanted to share a few of my favourites from their beautiful and moving maternity session.
