Give us a little history about yourself, and what made you choose to become a makeup artist?
I’ve always been a girly girl. In high school when the opportunity came up to work in the cosmetics section of a drug store I accepted the position and was hooked! After graduation I knew I wanted to turn my passion for make up into a career and applied to some of the wonderful makeup schools that Canada has to offer. I eventually headed to Toronto where I studied a CMU College of Makeup Art & Design (formerly Complections). While there I took advantage of some amazing opportunities and grew a lot as person but I love my family and am thrilled to be back home on the east coast!
Where are you located?
I am based out of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and primarily work from home. But the beauty of working with a freelance artist is that I come to you-wherever that may be!
Where do you draw your inspiration from when it comes to wedding day makeup?
I like to think I take my inspiration from my bride and what I’ve learned about her big day because I believe that your hair and makeup should be complemented by the feel of your wedding, it should complement you and all of the fine details of your big day.
What are your favorite wedding trends, colours and themes for the upcoming 2015 season?
I’ve always been a fan of a fresh faced natural look- a more polished version of yourself and this year its definitely still on trend. Pairing a nude face with a soft smokey eye of bronzes works beautifully to complement any bride. I absolutely love the not quite pink not quite red berry shade that think we’ll see a lot of this year. Also, a lot more brides are turning to beautiful headpieces which I love! They’re just so sweet.
What do you love most about wedding day preparation for brides and their bridesmaids?
“This is basically a slumber party without the sleeping”- said a very happy bride! This is one big reason why I love being a part of the morning of. Everyone is excited for the day to come, and thrilled to be pampered and listening to their favorite music. Not to mention its one of the biggest days of someone’s life- and the fact that I get to be a part of that is simply amazing.
What are some “golden rules” you believe every bride should follow when thinking about wedding day makeup?
- Always go with a trial. You’ll know that you’re going to look great on your big day, and the day of will go a lot smoother
- Keep in mind your every day routine. You’re going to wear more makeup on your wedding day but you want to feel and look like yourself
- Don’t forget your items for touchups- a powder and a lip colour! Did you love what the makeup artist used? We’d love to pick them up for you
What are some tips that brides should consider for the months leading up to their wedding day?
- A proper skin care routine is essential. You want to be using a three step system, as well as targeting any concerns with a scrub or spot treatment
- You want your lips to be well hydrated, lip color will stay on better when your lips are in good condition
- Drink plenty of water, your skin will thank you
- Talk to your hairstylist and esthetician about how long before the date should you be scheduling your last appointments.
