THE FLOWER SHOP

This is our first Industry Friends post, and Teddy and I are so excited to start sharing our amazing industry friends with all of our future brides and grooms.  We have many professionals with whom we have done work with and gladly recommend to anyone planning their wedding.

First up, this beauty, Charlotte Pierce, florist and owner of The Flower Shop on Granville Street in Halifax. If you are looking for the most beautiful bridal bouquet, or any type of flower arrangement, visit Charlotte on Granville, or click here to see browse through her website. Stay tuned for her site’s new look coming soon showcasing some of my photographs.

We spent a very fun filled day of dress up, donning OH DINA! flowercrowns, laughing, and taking portraits last week, then she let me run wild in her shop shooting some of her amazing arrangements.  I asked her to tell us a little bit about her flower shop; scroll down to read all about it:the flower shop-halifax wedding photographerthe flower shop-halifax wedding photographerthe flower shop-halifax wedding photographerthe flower shop-halifax wedding photographerthe flower shop-halifax wedding photographerthe flower shop-halifax wedding photographerthe flower shop-halifax wedding photographerthe flower shop-halifax wedding photographerthe flower shop-halifax wedding photographerthe flower shop-halifax wedding photographerthe flower shop-halifax wedding photographerthe flower shop-halifax wedding photographerthe flower shop-halifax wedding photographerthe flower shop-halifax wedding photographer

The Flower Shop was established in 1936, tell us more about the history and how it evolved into the shop it is today?

The shop has always been a mainstay of downtown Halifax and has always been owned independently and by women! There have been four different locations and four different owners. The most recent move has taken us to the Granville Court area in NSCAD in 2012 to a really beautiful building surrounded by creative neighbours. We’ve recently taken on some renovations to reconfigure the shop so it is more suitable for workshops and classes. The shop has evolved naturally with style and time but we still have clients who shopped at the original location. It’s amazing that we can still design for them and really fun to hear them talk about what the shop and city was like 70+ year ago.

What is it that you love most about working with flowers?

So much, but I think that every design is always different. Floral style seems to change as quickly as fashion, and we have the opportunity to be creative with every piece we make. It’s also really exciting to open boxes of fresh flowers each morning and become inspired for the day. Then of course there’s designing for weddings and bringing a couples vision to life through floral work.

Describe your design style for bridal bouquets and arrangements?

Bridal bouquets are really fun to make! Our favourite bouquets to make are loose, romantic and organic feeling. Of course we are experienced in many types, but those are our favourite. Designed with seasonal blooms and lots of cascading greens, this style is definitely making a comeback. We have many arrangements leaving the shop each day and each is unique but consistent with our style.

What are your favourite flowers to work with, and why, when making bridal bouquets?

The really fun thing about working with flowers is looking forward to favourites each season. Dahlias, garden roses, berries, and unique greenery are my favourite stems to work with. They all are really popular in wedding work and offer bouquets that are full of texture and not so formal feeling. Working with flowers that aren’t so uniformed shaped make for a more interesting looking bouquet and a more natural look.

Do you travel to other parts of Nova Scotia for weddings?

Of course, we design mostly out of our downtown shop, but install any set up on site when needed.

What are the flower trends in the bridal world right now?

We are loving where wedding bouquets are going. Brides are becoming brave by carrying lots of colour and opting for non-traditional flowers. For awhile it seemed like bouquets were an after thought to a gown ensemble, but now they are becoming an extension of it. Wrapping the stems in long ribbons that compliment a dress can really complete the look, we’re hoping for lots of this look next season.

How does it feel to be SILVER WINNER in the Coast Best of Halifax?

It feels so great! It means that our talent is being recognized not only for weddings but for the bouquets and arrangements we send out the door each day. We’ll always have room to improve, but it seems like we’re moving in the right direction. We have many people excited about our upcoming workshops over the Holidays so we’re looking forward to having the opportunity to create with our customers who have supported us for so long.the flower shop-halifax wedding photographerthe flower shop-halifax wedding photographerthe flower shop-halifax wedding photographerthe flower shop-halifax wedding photographerthe flower shop-halifax wedding photographerthe flower shop-halifax wedding photographerthe flower shop-halifax wedding photographerthe flower shop-halifax wedding photographerthe flower shop-halifax wedding photographerthe flower shop-halifax wedding photographerthe flower shop-halifax wedding photographer

Charlotte has more than just flowers and arrangements in her shop.  She has so many other little treasures that would make the perfect gift with the holidays coming soon.  For example, there adorable succulent terrariums, and little terrarium domes that you can make your own herb terrariums.  Keep checking back to her website for her workshop dates on how to make your own arrangements and terrariums.the flower shop-halifax wedding photographerthe flower shop-halifax wedding photographerthe flower shop-halifax wedding photographerthe flower shop-halifax wedding photographer
