IRON SALON

This week, I had a wonderful time with Nathan MacNeil and Sarah Arbuckle of Iron Salon, here in my studio for this week’s Industry Friends.  I first met Nathan through one of my gorgeous brides, Janice; you can have a look through her beautiful August wedding in Tatamagouche HERE.  I cannot wait to work with Nathan and Sarah in this upcoming wedding season.

Not only are Nathan and Sarah gorgeous people visually, they have such kind hearts, and would be the perfect compliment to a bride’s wedding day.

Scroll through the portraits (there are many, because I couldn’t chose) and salon images (it wouldn’t be me without putting an Oh Dina! flowercrown on my subject), to read Nathan & Sarah’s interview with us on how they can help make your wedding day hair (men & women) amazing!

Located at 1883 Granville Court in downtown Halifax; their space is is so amazing, and is the perfect atmosphere for a bridal party of ladies to spend the morning getting dolled up, drinking champagne, and being giddy with excitement.

Give us a little history about yourselves, and what made you choose to pursue hair design?
Sarah– I found myself always playing/colouring my friends hair at a young age and throughout high-school, I really enjoyed it. So for myself I thought I need to see where this could take me.
Nathan– I think we know when we are naturally drawn to something. After finishing a year of sciences at Dalhousie I followed my instincts and enrolled in hair school. Now I couldn’t imagine myself anywhere but in our salon together.

How did Iron Salon get started, and where are you located?
We are located at 1883 Granville court Halifax, Nova Scotia. We had been talking about having a salon for a few years, our ideas gradually snowballed. We started with a Pinterest board and an unpublished make-believe website. We started looking at locations “for fun”, but when we found the space to support our dream, “for fun” quickly became reality. It seemed like the salon came to life overnight.

Where do you draw your inspiration from when it comes to wedding hair styles?
A lot of the time inspiration comes from knowing your bride and understanding her style, the dress also has a huge influence. Any red carpet/award show hair is always on our radar. Those looks are easy to reference with clients and they’re usually on point with what’s in style.

What are your favourite wedding trends, colours and themes for the upcoming 2015 season?
We’re glad to see lots of glam bridal headpieces, they are a fun way to express the brides individuality. Old Hollywood glam style hair is a classic favourite of ours. The nude pastel and blush themes are really soft and elegant, in both dresses and decor. The slightly rustic theme is gaining popularity. Also, we’re noticing more demand for rose gold red hair colours.

What do you love most about wedding day preparation for brides and their bridesmaids?
Watching the transformation from pjs and button-down blouses, to flawless and camera ready never gets old for us. It always feels like there’s electricity in the air the day of, the buzz is almost intoxicating. But being part of such a special day is really an honor.

What are some “golden rules” you believe every bride should follow when thinking about wedding hair?

1. Definitely make the time for a trial run.
2. Adding volume to your hair always looks great in a photo. Back-combing and teasing might not be part of your regular routine but chances are it’s necessary on your wedding day.
3. If you colour your hair, book your appointment the week prior to your wedding to touch it up. This way your colour will be its freshest.

What are some hair tips that brides should consider for the months leading up to their wedding day?
If you’re growing your hair for your wedding, longer isn’t always better. If you plan on wearing an up-do, having your length just past your shoulders is ideal. Regular trims will help to keep your hair in optimal condition throughout the growing process.

Do you travel to other parts of the Maritimes or Canada for weddings?
We do consider doing on-site wedding hair, every wedding is unique. If booking on-site, the more notice we have the more likely we will be able to accommodate you.
